The Saunders Roe SRN-1 hovercraft on display at Cowes, Isle of Wight, 11 June 1959.

The revolutionary form of transport which can operate on sea and land has been officially launched in the Solent, off England's south coast.

The Hovercraft, which had been described as a cross between an aircraft, a boat and a land vehicle, was invented by boat-builder Christopher Cockerell.
