A vintage plot: One MILLION acre estate perfect for wine making goes on sale

For prospective wine makers across the globe it is an area of land with huge potential.

And with its land perfect for vine growing this one million acre estate in Argentina is attracting quite some interested.

But any wannabe wine maker will have to have deep pockets - as the estate costs £6m.

For sale: This one million acre estate in western Argentina is on the market and despite a price of £6m is attracting a large amount of interest

The 989,000 acre plot is the biggest ever to come up for sale in the world, and is the same size as Kent and is three-and-a-half times the size of Hong Kong.

Named the Estancia Punta del Agua - the Estate of the Tip of the Water - it is situated in the San Juan province in western Argentina and close to the border of Chile.

It is estimated that 60 per cent of the land could be turned to agriculture - and is a prime site for lucrative vineyards.

Prospective buyers from around the world - including Britain - have expressed a keen interest in it due to its wine-growing potential.

A road is currently being built through the area that will connect it to the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and will mean Chilean ports are only four hours away.

The area was last farmed 25 years ago before the population moved out of the area and left it to nature. The family that owns it is now selling.

It contains two rivers, meaning the land could be irrigated and it will shortly be linked to the electricity network.

There are mountains as well as fertile valleys and it is thought that sugar beet, alfalfa, olives, vines and sunflowers could all be grown there successfully.

Ken Jones, from estate agents Savills, said: 'This is probably the largest ring fenced freehold block of land to be offered for sale in the open market ever.

'It hasn't been farmed for about 25 years because there was a rural depopulation when things started to get tough.

'There used to be a school with 300 pupils and who ever bought it could build homes suitable for staff, but there are some restrictions.

'It does need electricity and until it is connected that would have to come from a generator.

'There are two rivers that go through the land so irrigation wouldn't be a problem.

'It is probably not too good for cattle but a range of cash crops could be grown there and there are areas that would suit vineyards.

'It is owned by a multi-national family and they've now decided to sell to generate income for their other projects.

'We estimate that about 60 per cent of the land could be farmed and a new road through the north of it will link it to the Brazilian Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean off Chile.

'It will mean that Chilean ports are just four hours away and that opens up the whole Chinese and Asian markets.

The huge estate is the same size as Kent and sits close to the border with Chile.

'We feel, once implemented, not only will the owner have one of the largest farms in the world, but also will have added value far beyond the cost of the scheme.

'It is a serious chunk of land at just six pounds an acre and we have had a great deal of interest.'

While any buyer will get a huge piece of land to play with, they will not trouble the amounts owned by the world's biggest landowners.

The Queen is the number one landowner in the world, with 6.6 billion acres including Canada and Australia.

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia is second with 553 million acres while King Bhumibol of Thailand owns 126 million acres.

A drive in the clouds: Flying cars could be in UK skies in five years

By Andrew Levy

Last updated at 9:14 AM on 18th July 2011

It's a concept that's been around for decades but never really seems to get off the ground.

But aviation experts are now saying a flying car could be in regular use in the UK within five years after a model was formally approved by U.S. authorities.

The $250,000 (£155,000) Terrafugia Transition is a two-seater aircraft which has a top speed of 115mph, a range of 500 miles on a tank of fuel and requires just 20 hours training to fly.

At the touch of a button it takes just 15 seconds for the wings to fold up automatically and the power to be re-routed from the propeller to the rear wheels.

It can then be driven at up to 65mph and will comfortably fit in a standard size garage.

'It's like a little Transformer,' said Terrafugia founder Carl Dietrich, referring to the children's toys that were turned into a blockbuster movie franchise.

Although aimed primarily at buyers in the U.S. where there are plenty of airstrips and 600 'fly-in' communities – Boeing 707 owner John Travolta being the best-known fan – more than 20 Britons have already declared an interest in the carbon-fibre vehicle.

Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson, who set a world record for a cross-Channel journey in an amphibious car, said: 'What a great idea. I'd absolutely like to hear more and I'm going to look into it myself.'

The U.S.'s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration paved the way for the flying car to be rolled out after recently announcing exemptions to allow it on American roads.

The Civil Aviation Authority confirmed such backing meant it would be relatively easy to be granted clearance by the European Safety Agency, based in Cologne.

Spokesman Jonathan Nicholson said: 'Safety standards are very similar between there and the U.S.'

The project, which began in 2006, appeared doomed as recently as last summer after expensive design changes costing £12 million were demanded.

These included introducing a stability control system and fitting tyres that could be used on public roads as well as runways.

But it was saved when the U.S military awarded a £40 million contract to develop a flying Humvee.

Two prototypes are now nearly finished and few changes are expected to be needed before the final model is ready to roll off the production line next year.

One of the 100 customers who have already paid a $10,000 deposit is Sherry Grobstein, a software engineer from Massachusetts who currently flies a Cessna 150.
