[WowMailz] Sharks Up Close

Sharks Up Close: 'shark shepherd' Jim Abernethy photographs the fearsome predators

Jim Abernethy, 52, from Florida, has spent 35 years living with the largest and most feared sharks on Earth. Some even follow him around like dogs. Jim has used his relationship with sharks to take close up pictures of the predatory fish in their natural habitats in the Bahamas, Mexico and South Africa and has released a book of his photographs - Sharks Up Close.

Jim has spent on average 320 days a year living with sharks. Pictured above are lemon sharks at the surface near Tiger Beach off the coast of the Bahamas

"I spend 11 months a year on board ship and I spend one month a year in nature," explained Jim. "I don't have a life... no kids or wife or anything. For the last 20 plus years my life has been about shooting both video and stills of sharks"

Each day Jim jumps from his boat and swims with the sharks for five or six hours, taking photographs and guiding his clients. "The creatures I like to be with most are sharks. They're the lions of the sea"

He even has a flying boat, called the Oversear, which is a modified microlight aircraft with a boat instead of wheels. Jim uses the Oversear to take off from the surface of the ocean to take aerial pictures of the underwater beasts.

A photograph taken from the flying boat of a school of spinner sharks taken off the coast of Palm Beach, Florida

Jim makes his living by chartering his boat for the world's best professional wildlife photographers and television crews. They all hope to catch a glimpse of the ocean's mightiest predatory fish thanks to Jim's intimate relationship with individual sharks that allow them to recognise him on sight

One friendly 15-feet long tiger shark called Emma greets Jim by swimming straight to him for a pat on the head and a tummy tickle

Carnivorous lemon sharks flock around Jim's legs in such close quarters that most people would be terrified

The closest Jim has ever come to a shark was when he was actually inside one. He was sucked into the mouth of a whale shark while photographing it, with only his hand and foot braced on the lips of the shark's eight-foot wide mouth stopping him from being swallowed whole

Jim started swimming with sharks at the age of nine when growing up in tranquil Singer island, off the coast of Florida. By 12 he became a spear fisherman and regularly dived underwater where he competed with sharks for food.

"I always feared sharks but after I realised that if you treat them with respect they will respond positively, so I decided to change my attitude," said Jim. "I took up my camera and started recording their behaviour. I never picked up a spear again"

"On average only four people a year are reported to die from shark attacks world wide. That's compared to 50 or 60 people dying from dog attacks each year in the US alone"

Jim decided to write his book to educate children on the important contribution sharks make to the ecosystem of the world's oceans. As top predators they regulate the abundance of other marine animals and help maintain the delicate balance essential to healthy oceans

Jim made the decision to rewrite his book after Chinese ships gained fishing rights in the Caribbean Sea. The fishing boats patrol the waters in the hunt for large sharks. When they catch a shark they cut its fin off, which is made into shark fin soup

In 2010 the shark fin industry processed 1170 tonnes of raw and processed shark fins worth £45 million. "When I hear of a shark boat in Emma's territory my heart goes into my throat," said Jim. "I'll jump in the water and keep her close to my boat with lots of attention and plenty of fishy treats"

Jim's book shows the belief that consuming sharks fins increases sexual desire is mistaken. Scientists have shown that sharks build up mercury in their system, which contributes to sexual disfunction in humans that eat their body parts

[WowMailz] Paragliding With Hawks

Breathtaking new extreme sport takes paragliding to new heights...gliding next to HAWKS

By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 3:31 PM on 9th February 2011

Most people can only dream of being able to soar through the sky with the birds.

But one British made his dream come true when he invented this claw-rious new extreme sport.

Scott Mason, 39, pioneered the extreme sport by paragliding next to hawks then inviting the birds to land on his arm.

Winging it: Scott Mason, now piloting, flys with Jeckle the Harris Hawk in Berga, Spain, in the new extreme sport he invented

He will fly the nest from the foothills of the Nepalese Himalayas to head for the Spanish beaches of Alicante this summer in a bid to make the sport the latest must-do-holiday activity.

For 120 euros passengers will be able to enjoy a 30 minute tandem flight by feeding and interacting with British bred harrier hawks in the spectacular backdrop of the Mediterranean coast.

As these action packed pictures show passengers are lifted high into the air on thermal winds, which is shared with the hawks, called Heckle and Jeckle, both one-year-old males.

Passengers can then act as a landing pad for the hawks in mid-flight by offering their outstretched arm to the predatory birds.

Parahawking, as the sport is known, is the brainchild of pilot Adam Hill from Brighton, and falconer Scott Mason from Dagenham.

Scott and Adam, both 39, established the art of paragliding with orphaned birds of prey in Pokhara, Nepal in 2003.

The British duo became the first people in the world to realize the dream of flying with the birds - by training hawks to cruise alongside para-gliders in the crystal clear skies over Pokhara, Nepal.

Since Scott met his Norwegian girlfriend, Anita, in 2008 the couple have successfully built up their para-hawking business together.

They also run a bird rescue center in Nepal, mainly for Himalayan vultures that would be unable to survive by themselves in the wild.

[WowMailz] History of Eid-e-Milad:

Maulid, Mawlid or Milad-un-Nabi is the birthday celebration of our beloved Prophet Muhammad(S.A.W). Muslims celebrated Prophet birthday as Eid-e-Milad. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) was born Mecca(Arabia) on 12th day of Rabi-ul-Awwal , which was Monday the 20th day of April, 571 A.C.

In the earliest days for the observance of Mawlid can be found in eighth-century Mecca, when the house in which Muhammad was born was transformed into a place of prayer by Al-Khayzuran (mother of Harun al-Rashid, the fifth and most famous Abbasid caliph).

The early celebrations included elements of Sufic influence, with animal sacrifices and torchlight processions along with public sermons and a feast. The celebrations occurred during the day, in contrast to modern day observances, with the ruler playing a key role in the ceremonies. Emphasis was given to the Ahl al-Bayt with presentation of sermons and recitations of the Qur'an. The event also featured the award of gifts to officials in order to bolster support for the ruling caliph.

The first public celebrations by Sunnis took place in twelfth-century Syria, under the rule of Nur ad-Din Zangi Though there is no firm evidence to indicate the reason for the adoption of the Shi'ite festival by the Sunnis, some theorise the celebrations took hold to counter Christian influence in places such as Spain and Morocco. Theologians denounced the celebration of Mawlid as unorthodox, and the practice was briefly halted by the Ayoubides when they came to power, becoming an event confined to family circles. It regained status as an official event again in 1207 when it was re-introduced by Muzaffar ad-din, the brother-in-law of Saladin, in Arbil, a town near Mosul, Iraq.

The practice spread throughout the Muslim world, assimilating local customs, to places such as Cairo, where folklore and Sufic practices greatly influenced the celebrations. By 1588 it had spread to the court of Murad III, Sultan of the Ottoman empire. In 1910, it was given official status as a national festival throughout the Ottoman empire. Today it is an official holiday in many parts of the world.

Celebration the birth anniversary of The Holy Prophet(PBUH):

The Muslims celebrates the birth anniversary of the Holy Prophet on 12 Rabi-ul-Awwal of the Islamic lunar calendar year. For Muslims, This date is important to Muslims because the birth of the Prophet Muhammad is regarded as a great blessing for the history of mankind.

The Prophet Muhammad is deemed to be the chief of all the Prophets sent on earth and it is to him that the Holy Qur'an was revealed.

On the day of Eid-e-Milad large street processions are held and homes or mosques are decorated. In mosques, religious leaders and scholars make speeches on different aspects of the life of Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W) speacially on Prophet's birth, childhoos, youth and adult life. The religious leaders tells us about focusing the characteristic of Mohammad (S.A.W) in different manner, on His teachings, sufferings, and how He forgave even His most bitter enemies.

On the occasion of Prophet birthday recited the Hamd is poetry in praise of Allah, Naat (urdu), Qasida (Arabic and Farsi) Ginan (Gujerati) is poetry in the honor of Prophet Muhammad and the Imams. In Muslim countries, streets, mosques and buildings are decorated with colorful buntings and pennants and well illuminated at night. Affluent Muslims generously donate to charity. Feasts are arranged and food is served to guests and the poor.

In Pakistan the day of Eid-e-Milad celebrated Like Eid-ul-Azha and Eid-ul-Fiter in all cities with much pleasure. Every person wear the simple and shiny dress. Hazarat Muhammad (S.A.W). On this occasion public meetings are held specially in Bazar.

"And peace on him on the day he was born, and on the day he dies, and on the day he is raised to life" Holy Quran 19:15

I wish you Happy Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH). May God bless all of us.

[WowMailz] Earthquakes

An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or temblor) is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves. The seismic activity of an area refers to the frequency, type and size of earthquakes experienced over a period of time. Earthquakes are measured with a seismometer; a device which also records is known as a seismograph. The moment magnitude (or the related and mostly obsolete Richter magnitude) of an earthquake is conventionally reported, with magnitude 3 or lower earthquakes being mostly imperceptible and magnitude 7 causing serious damage over large areas. Intensity of shaking is measured on the modified Mercalli scale. At the Earth's surface, earthquakes manifest themselves by shaking and sometimes displacing the ground. When a large earthquake epicenter is located offshore, the seabed sometimes suffers sufficient displacement to cause a tsunami. The shaking in earthquakes can also trigger landslides and occasionally volcanic activity. These pictures are evidence of what nature can do to us, in a split second.
